PLAYER↴ Name: TEN Contact: Other Characters: CHARACTER↴ Character Name: YoRHa No.9 Type S, aka 9S Age: 3, but he is an android with the appearance and attitude of a young teenager Species: Android. Presumably he's made of highly processed alloys as well as other stuff to give him a fleshy appearance, meaning he will have little to no pure iron in him Canon: NieR: Automata Canon Point: Chapter 05-04, after reporting in at the Bunker Character Info: A Wikia link Personality: There are those who would say that 9S' personality is the way it is because he was built that way. As a Type S model (a Scanner), he was created for research and investigation, primarily through scouting or hacking into the machine based lifeforms currently populating Earth. Because of this, 9S is observant and has an inquisitive nature, hoarding a wealth of information and constantly turning it over in his head to try and make sense of it all. And when there is no sense to be made, he's happy to ponder aloud, putting forth hypotheses even if there's no realistic way to actually test them. Anything that's new to him is treated a lot like a novelty, fascinating him him endlessly until he can solve the puzzle before him. But that same curiosity is often what lands him in hot water; where most people would err on the side of caution when poking deeper into high security locations for fear of being caught, 9S is the sort who cannot resist delving further when there's secrets to be uncovered, poking his nose into all kinds of business. In part, it's because he's one of the latest android models and knows he's good at his job, leading to slight overconfidence in his abilities that drives him to indulge his curiosity more than it is wise. Of the various android models, 9S is notably quite chatty and informal, often sounding like a teenager when he responds to others warning him of dangers with a dismissive, "Yeah, yeah." He's a frequent complainer, whining about things like sand getting in his shoes while he's crossing a desert, or being sent on additional errands while he's out on a mission. Often it seems like the circuit to keep his mouth shut is broken, as 9S regularly voices his wonder (or complaints) to whoever is around to listen and wears his emotions on his sleeve, despite his partner's warnings that, "Emotions are prohibited." Sometimes his casual manner can come off as overly familiar, resulting in him getting told off for flirting when his intention was sincere praise rather than flattery. ...Mostly. When he's with people he can feel relaxed around, he'll be less restrained with his snarky and snide comments, and when faced with things that particularly frustrate him, he can behave like a petulant child who kicks his feet and shouts when things don't go his way. However, despite all that, 9S is a soldier, giving a certain degree of formality to his interactions with people he works with, especially his superiors. His mission is his purpose and he'll generally stick to it -- even though he'll whine about it where the Commander can't hear him -- until given enough reason not to. For all his childish behaviour, he is good at what he does, often exceeding expectations when performing his scouting and hacking duties, able to formulate plans to take down enemies he's never encountered before while in the thick of battle. He won't hesitate to sacrifice himself for the sake of his mission -- or to protect the lives of other androids -- and has a seemingly blasé attitude about dying; it's easy to not be worried about death when you can just upload your saved data to a new body after your current body explodes. As a result, he has a backbone of steel determination and will continue to complete whatever mission or goal he has even when he's in severe pain from his arms and legs getting blown off. (Though he gets this feeling that he's losing something important every time he dies...) Despite his rather easy-going nature, 9S is particularly scathing towards the machine lifeforms of his world, initially having a very black and white view of the world; he's on the side of the androids and machines are his enemy. He perceives the machine lifeforms as incapable of feelings and emotions the way humans and androids do. It takes a lot of evidence to even begin to change his mind, from repeatedly observing the speech and behaviours of the machines that he brushes off as meaningless imitations, to the continued assistance of the leader of a pacifistic machine village. Even when he's hacked into the minds of machines and been confronted with their thoughts and feelings, 9S still has a hard time believing they are even capable of it despite seeing and experiencing their emotions so intimately that a machine's despair over the meaning of its existence bleeds over into his own mind. When it comes to machines, 9S will have plenty of disparaging words to say, ranging from claims that even the gentlest of the machines still doesn't have a heart to firmly saying peace between machines and androids will "never happen." That said, 9S does not handle loneliness very well. Because he is a scout, he is often deployed on solo missions, so when he's given a partner, he's overjoyed, saying it's, "kinda fun!" 9S truly craves companionship, especially that of his partner, 2B, even though she often tries to keep him at arms' length through her stoicism. There's a not insignificant part of him that likes to feel useful -- he likes to feel as though his life has purpose -- and so, while he will complain about doing things he views as a waste of time or a pain in the butt, he will (begrudgingly) complete whatever errand or task that is given to him. However, his comparatively breezy attitude is built on fragile truths: that his existence has meaning and that 2B exists in his life. When he discovers the truth of his existence, it breaks him so thoroughly that he's incapable of recovering on his own. His interactions with others become flat and tired as he fails to perform regular maintenance on himself, causing him to slowly suffer mechanical failure and deterioration of his mental stability. 9S stops caring about living -- what's the point? -- and in an attempt to find purpose where there is none, he viciously transforms his old disgust of machines into a full-blown genocidal rage, perceiving that all the hardship he subsequently encounters is specifically to make him suffer. He becomes completely incapable of listening to reason or logical thought and mercilessly destroys everything and everyone in his path, all with an unnatural smile across his face. But as long as he's kept blinkered, 9S will never have to know how ruthless and cruel he can be in the dark, only remembering the carefree days where he fishes from the sides of dilapidated buildings with 2B and dreams of a day where he can go shopping to buy her a T-shirt. Abilities: 9S being an android gives him several abilities just by his nature of being non-biological. This includes:
However, despite being an android, 9S is still susceptible to various human-like weaknesses due to being built in the image of humans, e.g. he can be strangled and stabbed to death, and losing limbs will cause him noticeable agony as he has pain receptors built into him. As a Type S model, 9S has several additional abilities: Scanning: He can technologically scan the area for lifeforms, both biological and mechanical, as well as accurately pinpoint locations and mark them on an internal 3D map. 9S is able to transmit all information he obtains wirelessly back to the Bunker or to other androids he's working with. Due to the technological limitations of the Carnival, he likely will not be able to make use of his full suite transmission abilities, but he or his Pod (as detailed further below) may be able to tap into the walkie-talkies without needing a headset (if the mod team permits). Additionally, he is able to scan for valuable goods, though what is considered 'valuable' to the Carnival would need to be defined to him. But since his scanning abilities were designed with the parameters of his world and not other worlds, he may not be able to accurately interpret the data he is receiving (I.e. This is me saying I'll check in to see what he can and can't find out so I'm not infomodding.) Hacking: Anything with digital circuits (computers, modern cars, etc.), he is able to hack and lift information from, cause malfunctions, or in some cases, take them over. He'll likely have more difficulty doing it in game, due to the different technology of the worlds they visit (i.e. this is me curbing his hacking ability), and would probably particularly struggle with older technology since it would be so backwater to 9S. Basically, I will apply all the telepathy rules (obtain ooc permission, it is fallible etc.) and limitations on 9S' hacking. He is also able to hack himself (and other androids) in order to perform internal maintenance, but it is the technological equivalent to forcing his vision to focus when he's dizzy from being knocked about rather than a true repair of mechanical failure. If his circuits have been physically damaged, no amount of hacking will be able to fix it. Below are the following things 9S will be arriving with; I'm ok with him not being able to bring any of these
His tactical support unit, Pod 153, would also be along for the ride. Pod 153 has a rudimentary personality, but its primary function is to support 9S both in combat and in data gathering. It will not separate from 9S and will not interact with people not 9S unless explicitly ordered to. In general, Pod 153 has access to a large database of information (though more limited since it will not be able to connect to the Bunker's server from the Carnival), from which it will provide advice to 9S that he may or may not ignore. Additionally, Pod 153 has better transmission functionality than 9S and constantly monitors 9S' status, providing alerts when he's experiencing malfunctions. Basically, Pod 153 is 9S' robotic secretary/advisor/data analyst, and I believe it functionally falls under the pet rules. For the purposes of Lost Carnival, Pod 153's gatling gun will be disabled, as per the Ringmaster's rules. At the moment, Pod 153 only has the laser program installed, which basically fires a big fuck-off laser that requires charging after release. If Pod 153 is not allowed in the Carnival, I'm more than happy for 9S to arrive without it. CARNIVAL↴ Soul Colour: Red Ideal Jobs: Scout, Mercenary. I would also be down for everything other than Repairman (I already play one) for the hilarity, as almost all jobs are 100% not within his limited skillset. Relevant Experience: Scout: 9S was literally created for scouting, as per his abilities list. It is his job to scout the devastated remains of Earth and provide information to the Bunker about how hostile the area is, as well as recover data that will assist the war on the machines. Even in worlds with low levels of technology, he would at least be able to perform scans of the area and build a map. He'll always know where he's going and he can make recordings of his encounters, which can be played back to others via Pod 153 (if it is allowed to be brought into Lost Carnival). Mercenary: 9S is also quite capable of fighting (though not nearly as well as an android actually designed for combat) and often ended up being errand boy for various characters who needed a range of things done for them, such as machine destruction, finding missing friends, gathering items, searching for locations depicted in photographs, recovering digital data, escorting machines dressed as clowns as they marched for peace... the list goes on. Reason for Joining: The opportunity to study humans for a year and a day. Though he's reluctant to have no contact with the Bunker for the duration of his stay, the promise of no time passing while he's with the Carnival and the opportunity to finally meet Actual Humans is enough to sway 9S into joining the Carnival; he just can't contain his curiosity! Besides, what better way to understand his creators than to actually interact with them? Surely the information he'll bring back will be more than worth the fact he's kinda sorta doing this behind his superior's back...? SAMPLES↴ Sample 1 Sample 2 |
